CHIPDRIVE® Driver Card Module Supports Safer Roads in Europe
Fremont, CA – February 1, 2007 – SCM Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SCMM, Prime Standard: SMY), a leading provider of solutions that open the Digital World, is now supporting freight and passenger drivers and transportation companies throughout Europe with the CHIPDRIVE® Driver Card Module. The new CHIPDRIVE® Driver Card Module enables professional freight and passenger drivers to read out and transfer required data from their digital driver cards to their employers’ offices while en route, potentially making Europe’s roads safer.
As of May 1st 2006, all new freight and passenger vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons and buses with more than nine seats throughout the EU must be equipped with a digital tachograph. This control tool collects and archives data such as date, time and distance covered, and enables more accurate monitoring of drivers’ driving and resting times. The intention is to reduce road accidents caused by overtired drivers by simplifying and standardizing the collection and management of critical data about the number of consecutive hours driven. Every driver carries a digital driver card that downloads and stores all driver activities when inserted into the tachograph.
Until now, every driver had to read out information from the digital driver card and provide it to the transportation company at the beginning and end of each assignment. With the new CHIPDRIVE® Driver Card Module, drivers now can use a notebook computer to read out this information and call it in from the road, ensuring that proper rest periods are being observed and allowing transport companies to better track the location and status of each driver. If desired, the driver can also transfer the data using a notebook. The software module displays all relevant data and can create private backup files for the user.
Once installed on a notebook computer, the CHIPDRIVE® Driver Card Module reads out data from digital driver cards inserted into any attached SCM, CHIPDRIVE® or compatible smart card reader.
CHIPDRIVE® Driver Card Module is available for EURO 49.95 at www.chipdrive.net.
